I am a libertarian because I believe that freedom is a necessary, though not sufficient, condition for promoting moral virtue and social progress. That is why freedom cannot be traded incrementally for other values, because doing so would undermine the achievement of those other values being sought. As best as I can tell, non-libertarians think freedom is just one of many values to exchange incrementally for other values, so they think libertarians only value freedom since libertarians are not (or, at least, to a lesser extent) willing to compromise freedom.

It's quite easy to see this phenomenon in action when you ask a person two simple questions:
1. Do you support threatening people with violence in order to take their money? ("No, of course not!")
2. Do you support taxes?
Inevitably, that person will go off in a third, unrelated direction about how taxes are "necessary for society" or some other justification for their opinion. Notice that it would be perfectly fine if they were to say, "Yes, I support threatening people with violence in order to take their money if I think it's necessary for society", because at least then they would be consistent and honest about their position, but they never do. They will dance about, trying to claim both that they don't support violence and that they support taxes.
Funny that.
